Off-Road Extravaganza: Hundreds of Miles for ATV Adventures

Shasta Lake isn’t just a body of water; it’s a playground for off-road enthusiasts. With hundreds of off-road miles designed specifically for ATVs, the area invites you to kick up some dust and experience the freedom of the trail. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a beginner, Shasta Lake boasts a variety of trails catering to all experience levels.

Trail Paradise in the Lakehead Area

The Shasta Lakeshore Retreat stands out for more than just its scenic lakefront location; it’s a gateway to multiple great trails in the Lakehead Area. In some cases, you can say goodbye to the hassle of trailers – imagine stepping out your front door, hopping on your ATV, and instantly immersing yourself in the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Shasta Lakeshore Retreat’s Favorite Four ATV Trails

1. Lakeshore Drive Trail (Drive from House* or Trailer):  Drive up Daisy Lane and take a left on Lakeshore Drive. The county road will stop shortly, but the pavement will continue for a few miles. Accessible directly from your vacation home or unload from a trailer at the end of the paved road.  Explore the beauty along Lakeshore Drive, with options to head out to the lake point or ascend the mountain.  After about an hour of riding, you will come to the end of the road where there is a barrier that prevents you from going further.  Lots of lake and mountain views from this trail.  In the winter, you will likely come upon snow.  Cell phone coverage on this trail is poor so plan for emergencies.  Plan for 2 hours.

2. Sugarloaf Mountain Trail (Drive from House* or Trailer):  Drive up Daisy Lane, take a right on Lakeshore Drive, and continue until you reach Forest Drive. Turn left, go uphill, and turn on the road to the right, transforming into a dirt road. Please keep your speed down until you pass the homes on this dirt trail.  Accessible directly from your vacation home or unload from a trailer. Be mindful of potential law enforcement encounters.  Navigate the paths around Sugarloaf Mountain for a thrilling off-road experience.  This is a longer ride than the first one and does go to a higher elevation.  Lots of great lake and mountains views plus the town of Lakehead.  You will also get multiple good views on Mount Shasta.  Cell phones tend to work very well on this trail.  Plan for 2-3 hours.

* In the case of both of the trails above, there is a chance that a Sherriff or Highway may encounter you (although rare) on the road before you get to the trail.  Officially, you can’t drive on Lakeshore Drive but it really depends on the officer.  Many people drive there ATVs on this road to go to the market or get to these trails.  Please do at your own risk.

3. Trail to Trinity Lake (Trailer):  Leave with your ATV on a trailer, head to Highway 5 North, and take the Vollmers/Dog Creek Exit. Follow Dog Creek Road until the dirt starts. Bring a map, as there are many forks in the road. Choose the path with a paved road or continue on dirt to Jackass Campground with a beautiful view of Trinity Lake.  Follow the twists and turns to Trinity Lake, taking in the scenic beauty along the way.  Cell coverage is mixed.  This is more of an adventure and you should plan on a 4-6 hour excursion.  We want to stress again, that there are many forks in the road so bring a paper map.

4. Trail to McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake (Trailer):  Leave with your ATV on a trailer, go to Highway 5 North, take the Vollmers/Dog Creek Exit, and head east on Delta School Road. Follow Fenders Ferry Road to the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake, making key turns indicated on the map.  Navigate the forks along Fenders Ferry Road to reach the rarely used paved road and continue to McCloud Bridge Campground.  Cell phone coverage is mixed.
