Grand View: Despite its modest length, the Heart Lake Trail is a titan in terms of scenery. The adventure begins at the Castle Lake trailhead, a destination in itself. Ascend to a craggy bench above massive Castle Lake, where Heart Lake rests nestled into rocky cliffs, offering one of the finest views of Mount Shasta. The trail surprises with a semi-loop option, leading to the summit of Castle Peak for even more fantastic vistas, including the Castle Crags and distant Lassen Peak.

The Trail: Starting at the Castle Lake trailhead, the path weaves through alpine terrain. As you climb the eastern wall above Castle Lake, periodic openings reveal views of the expansive lake and the distant summit of Castle Peak. Upon reaching a saddle 400 feet above Castle Lake, the trail diverges toward the high ridge, leading to the small, scenic Heart Lake.

Heart Lake Magic: Though diminutive, Heart Lake packs a punch with its stunning views of Mount Shasta. The south side offers an optimal vantage point, providing a reflection of California’s most spectacular mountain. In summer, the lake invites a refreshing swim, making it a perfect spot to unwind.

Ascent to Castle Peak: For those seeking an extra adventure, the ascent of Castle Peak forms a loop with the Heart Lake Trail. Cross the outlet of Heart Lake, and follow the trail west to reach the summit. From here, enjoy a panorama that spans from Mount Shasta to the Castle Crags and beyond.

Here are directions from the Shasta Lakeshore Retreat in Lakehead to the Castle Lake Trailhead, starting with heading north on Highway 5:

  1. Start: Head north on Interstate 5 (Highway 5) from Shasta Lakeshore Retreat in Lakehead.
  2. Exit 736: Take Exit 736 toward Central Mt Shasta.
  3. Merge onto W. Lake Street: After exiting, merge onto W. Lake Street.
  4. Cross I-5: Continue on W. Lake Street, crossing over Interstate 5.
  5. Left onto Old Stage Road: At the stop sign, turn left onto Old Stage Road.
  6. Right onto WA Barr Road: After 0.25 miles, veer right onto WA Barr Road.
  7. Continue South: Continue south on WA Barr Road, crossing over the dam that forms Lake Siskiyou.
  8. Left onto Castle Lake Road: Just past the dam, make a left turn onto Castle Lake Road.
  9. Drive to Castle Lake Trailhead: Follow Castle Lake Road for approximately 7 miles until you reach the road’s end at Castle Lake. The Castle Lake Trailhead is located at the end of Castle Lake Road.
